DescriptionA young woman is seated beside a lake or stream sketching the landscape. She wears a dress with a broad collar and cuffs, a brooch, and a shawl. Her hair is braided. Her bonnet is on the bank behind her. She uses a pencil to draw on a sheet of paper that rests on her lap, probably on a drawing board. A dog lies at her feet. Trees and flowers, apparently roses, grow nearby. Additional flowers, including iris, are in the left foreground. Three cows stand in the water. A cliff is in the left background. A small ruin is on a promontory. A mountain is in the distance.
