DescriptionMan's black silk plush top hat with the crown slightly flared on the sides. The brim is about 1 5/8 inches wide, and is slightly curved up on the sides. The edge of the brim is bound with black grosgrain ribbon, which is wider and curved inwards on the sides. The hatband is black wool. The sweatband is brown leather, with a small cream-colored silk bow at the center back. The hat is lined with cream-colored silk (moiré inside the top of the crown, plain on the sides). It is stiffened with shellacked muslin.

MarkingsPrinted in gold inside top of crown: within a circle "EXTRA QUALITY/ REGISTERED/ MOVEO ET PROFICIO/ KNOX/ FIFTH AVE. NEW YORK". Also within the circle is a design of eagles flanking a shield. Applied gold letters inside top of crown: "SB". Stamped in gold on sweatband: "HORSFALL'S/ 93-99 Asylum Street/ COMPLETE OUTFITTERS TO MEN". Paper tag stuck inside sweatband: "7 3-8".Subject Terms
