DescriptionHalf-length portrait of a young man wearing a coat or jacket trimmed with lambswool and braid and a shirt with a high collar. Beneath the portrait is an emblem consisting of a lion standing beside a shield. The lion holds a banner that reads: "CHAMPION OF ENGLAND."

Accession number inscribed in pencil, lower left.NotesSubject Note: Tom Sayers (1826-1865) was Heavyweight Champion of England from 1857 to 1860. On 17 April 1860, he fought John C. Heenan at Farnborough, England. Heenan seemed to have the advantage, when the crowd broke into the ring. Sayers received a special Silver Championship Belt to commemorate this fight and retired from the ring.
