DescriptionA political cartoon featuring a reversable caricature portrait of Jefferson Davis. One side depicts a shaggy-haired man with long mustaches wearing a hat and uniform with epaulets. In the lower right and left are a four line poem and four small battle scenes. The inscription reads: "JEFF. RAMPANT. / WAR / With lion heart and frantic mien, / The warrior seeks the battle scene, / To risk his precious blood, and fight / For glory and his vaunted right." When the image is turned upside down, the subject appears to be a donkey with long ears and a bridle. Beneath this image is a second poem and scenes including a man on a donkey, a harvest scene, a farm, and cattle drinking from a pond. The inscription on this side reads: "JEFF. SUBDUED. / PEACE. / But when he hears the cannon roar, / And views the dying in his gore, / His courage fails and then, alas! / He homeward travels like an ass."
