He stands beside a black horse with a bridle, saddle, and saddle blanket decorated with stars and tassels. Ferns and other plants grow in the foreground. Palm trees are at the right. A military encampment with two tents, a formation of soldiers, and a man on horseback are in the background. A flag flies over a town in the distance.

NotesSubject Note: Zachary Taylor (1784-1850) was a hero of the Mexican War (1846-1848). He assumed command of the U.S. forces in January 1846 and his troops encamped near Matamoros in the spring of 1846. Taylor became President of the United States in 1849. He died in 1850.
