DescriptionMap of Milford, Connecticut, from the "Hither Lots," "Fresh Meadow," "Sqabble Hill," and "Eseck Plain" to the north; the Indian or East River to the east; the Long Island Sound to the south; and the "Great Salt Meadows," "Pumpkin Delight," and Scoliokorat or Snake Pond to the west. Various natural features aside from those already named are labeled: "Dreadful Swamp," "Stubby Plain," and "Negros Lake," "Milford Island," and "Island Bar" (including the explanation, "Bare at half ebb." The "Line of Palisadoes" is inscribed in orange around the town center. Real estate lots are denoted with black squares and numbers or letters, which correspond to the list of occupants on the left and right sides of the map. Roman numerals are used to list "home lots of the first Planters." Quite a few features are included that contributed to Milford's history since its founding in 1639, including Trumbull Fort (1776) and various common fences. Three cemeteries are delineated: the "first grave yard," the burying ground and the "Indian Burying Place." At the bottom of the map, there are three vignettes, one a more distant view of the town, one showing the public buildings and the other a showing the town from West Point.

The first purchase was made of the Indians on the 12th of Feb- / ruary. It comprehended about as much land as is represented by this map. Afterwards six / other purchases were made, parts of which are now contained within the Towns of Derby / Woodbridge & Orange. The first Planters were mostly from the counties of Essex and York. / A part of them were of Mr Pruddens company who landed at New Haven, and remain / ed there the first year The rest were from Wethersfield, where Mr Prudden preached while / his people were making preparation to move to this place, and before from Watertown / Mass. They located themselves on each side of the river and the west end Brook for / the convenience of water. The first House erected stood at the head of the harbour, des / ignated by an asterisk was called the Common House it being the common residence / of the Planters while building. In 1648, it was sold to James Rogers for 21 S. The settlem / ent was surrounded with Palisadoes from 8 to 10 feet high for defence against the Indians / and a watch was kept night and day. Each soldier stood as sentinel every fifth night: / and was relieved at sunset by drumbeat when the watch was changed. On their Holy Sab / -bath and Leeture days they went armed to meeting. The town is bounded West by the Hous / -atonic River NorthEast by Orange and SouthEast by Long Island Sound. The number of inha / bitants by the census of 1830 was 2,256: and have probably since increased to 2,800. There / are at present in the Town 480 Freeholders, 500 Electors, and 400 Houses."
