Lowell claimed conscientious objector status during World War II, for which he served time in prison in Danbury, Connecticut. In the 1960s, he became more active politically, participating in the civil rights movement and opposing the United States involvement in Vietnam. While politics to some extent informed his writing, he also wrote about his relationships with women and his struggle with mental illness. An active poet from 1944-1977, he served as US Poet Laureate in 1947, the year he also won his first Pulitzer Prize, for "Lord Weary's Castle." He won the Pulitzer again in 1974, for "The Dolphin." Other awards include the National Book Award in 1960, for "Life Studies," and the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1977, for "Day by Day."
