After receiving his BA from the University of Michigan, he went on to do graduate work at Harvard. He was a professor at Vassar, Boston University, the University of Connecticut and Harvard. In 1942, his first volume of poetry, "The Garden is Political," was published. From 1949 to 1956, he was the director of the Young Men's and Young Women's Hebrew Association Poetry Center in New York City. Brinnin was responsible for bringing Dylan Thomas to the United States, and was responsible for all of Thomas's American tours. In 1955, he wrote "Dylan Thomas in America," a personal account of Thomas' time in the United States. He wrote biographies of Gertrude Stein and Truman Capote, and biographical sketches of Capote; Henri Cartier-Bresson; Elizabeth Bowen; Edith, Osbert and Sacheverell Sitwell; Alice B. Toklas; and T.S. Eliot.
