He was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, and educated at Harvard University and the New York Law School. In 1916, he joined the Hartford Accident and Indemnity Company and moved to Hartford, Connecticut, where he lived for the rest of his life. He started writing poetry late in life; it wasn't until 1923 that his first book of poems was published. Stevens won the National Book Award for Poetry twice, in 1951 and 1955, and the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1955.
