In 1959, he received his BFA from Yale University, where he studied painting under Josef Albers. Strand started teaching in 1962, and currently holds the position of Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University. In 1990, he was the United States Poet Laureate, and in 1999, won the Pulitzer in poetry for his book "Blizzard of One."
