On April 20, 1861 he was mustered into the First Regiment Infantry Rifle Company A as a Private. He was mustered out on July 31, 1861. On August 18, 1862 he enlisted again. On September 20, 1862 he was mustered into the Twenty-Second Regiment Infantry Company D as a Second Lieutenant. He was promoted to First Lieutenant of Company H on March 30, 1863.
