A."; lower right, in pencil, accession numberNotesSubject Note: An African American soldier named Charles H. Strong from East Haven was mustered into the Twenty-ninth Colored Regiment Infantry Company H on March 8, 1864 as a Private. On April 30, 1864 he was promoted to Corporal. He was mustered out on October 24, 1865. The man in this photograph does not appear to be African American, however, and the inscription indicates that he served with the First Connecticut Volunteer Artillery. No one with that name is recorded as serving with that regiment. (Ruocco, 04/1420/2012)
