RIGGS / 1 CONN HA"; lower center, in pencil, accession numberNotesSubject Note: Charles Riggs of Derby enlisted and was mustered in as a private in the First Connecticut Volunteer Heavy Artillery on May 22 1861. He was discharged on May 21 1864 when his time expired. He then enlisted and was mustered in as a corporal in the Third Connecticut Volunteer Light Battery. He was promoted to sergeant on January 1 1865 and mustered out June 23 1865. (Finlay 4/19/2012)Date Note: According to the inscription on the photograph, this portrait was made when Riggs was serving with the First Connecticut Heavy Artillery, so it must date from between 1861 and 1864.
