Southworth was from Saybrook, Connecticut. He enlisted on October 10, 1861 and was mustered into the Eleventh Regiment Infantry, Company K on November 14, 1861 as a Sergeant. He was discharged on December 23, 1864 because his term had expired. In 1862 his Company was in Newbern, North Carolina, which was where the photograph was taken, though he appears in civilian clothes with his wife in this picture. (Ruocco, 04/21/12)
