Calhoun served as both a Congressman and Senator for the state of South Carolina. He was a member of the cabinets of Presidents Tyler and Monroe. He also served as Vice President under President John Quincy Adams and President Andrew Jackson. Calhoun was known for being an advocate of states rights and sought to preserve the Southern right to keep slaves.Collections
