He also served eight years each as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and as Secretary of State. In addition to these achievements, his active participation in the debates at the Constitutional Convention in 1787, and his coauthorship with John Jay and Alexander Hamilton of 'The Federalist Papers,' won Madison the title "Father of the Constitution."
