DescriptionAnkle-high, side-lacing gaiter boot ("bottine") with a brown prunella (twill-woven cotton warp, wool weft) upper, stitched over a dark brown leather toe fox. The toe is square, and the leather continues in a shallow extension on either side, gradually sloping to meet the sole at about the middle of the bottine. The sole is straight, but the pattern of wear, with one side of the shoe much worn away, shows it to have been worn on the left foot. It is flat, without any heel. The lacing is on the inside of the foot; there is a narrow and straight tongue which covers the ankle under the lacing. The boot is lined with both twill-woven and plain-woven undyed cotton; it is bound around the edges with brown silk tape.
