InscribedOn verso, upper left, in black ink, "539"; in pencil and black ink, "Pecannut Hickory. / This is a rare specimen. It is located on the 'Retreat' grounds in Hartford. / It is a southern tree and it is not probably that a northern specimen of the kind can / be found so far north. This species bears a nut that is known as Pecannut, but / I understand that this tree has never produced nuts. Thre is not so perfect a tree / of any kind, growing in this section that I know of. It must be nearly seventy feet high / and seemingly perfect in every respect. I have a view of this institution as far back / as 1840, at which time the grounds were not planted, so that I conclude this tree was / not on the grounds at that time, and as this description was written in 1890, it must / not be oer fifty years since it was transplanted. / Fred S. Brown."NotesSubject Note: The Retreat for the Insane, where the pecan tree was locataed, is now known as the Institute for Living. The tree was still on the grounds in 2012. (Finlay 3/21/2012)
