InscribedOn verso, upper left, in black ink, "539"; in black ink, "This is an Elm Tree located on premeses [sic] at the foot of / Canton Street - east of the railroad tracks at that point. / It is about 50 years of age, and probably the most perfectly / developed tree to be found in these parts. / It stands on a natural wharflike elevation which is the / western limit of the large meadow that extends from that point to the / Conn. river. As there is a natural drainage of the meadow to a ditch under and / by the side of this natural table on whic[h] this tree stands it has the / benefit of the wash of the fertilizing drift of the meadow and a constant / supply of water which is quite necessary to develop a perfect elm tree. / This with an alluvial soil of ten to fifteen feet deep accounts / for this beautiful specimen. / Fred. S. Brown / Aug. 8th 1886"; lower right, in pencil, accession numberNotesSubject Note: 1939.16.12 is a slightly different view of the same tree. (Finlay 9/12/2011)
