NotesJames S. Wadsworth was born in Geneseo, New York, in 1807. He attended Harvard and Yale and spent most of his life managing his family's extensive estates. He volunteered for service in the Civil War and was commissioned as a brigadier general, despite his complete lack of military experience. He nevertheless served with distinction until he was killed at the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864. (Finlay 9/29/2011)
