He attended Harvard and Yale and spent most of his life managing his family's extensive estates. He volunteered for service in the Civil War and was commissioned as a brigadier general, despite his complete lack of military experience. He nevertheless served with distinction until he was killed at the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864. (Finlay 9/29/2011)
