DescriptionA horse, with saddle and bridle, is trotting towards the right. The name "Gen. Jackson" appears in an arc that extends from the horse's head to its tail. A second arc extends from one side of the composition to the other; within this arc, in the spaces at the corners, and in the lower margin are fern-like leaves.
Object number1985.203.0
InscribedOn acid-free cardboard mount, lower margin, in pencil, "USE CAUTION WHEN LIFTING AND RETURNING INTERLEAVNG PAPER!" "Artist Unknown X.1985.25.1.0 / General Jackson (a Horse)"NotesSubject Note: An article in the Hartford Courant in 1866 refers to a trotting horse named Stonewall Jackson, but it appears that the name was not uncommon and there is no evidence that this silhouette represents this particular horse. The horse in the silhouette does appear to be either trotting or pacing. (Finlay 8/24/2010)
