DescriptionHalf-length profile portrait of a girl, facing right. She is wearing a dress with a high waistline and long sleeves with small puffs at the shoulders.
Object number1986.283.5
InscribedOn verso of frame, in pencil, "Daughter of / Timothy Dutton III"On lower edge of frame, in red paint, accession numberNotesSubject Note: Despite the inscription, the subject probably is not the daughter of Timothy Dutton I. If the ca. 1830 date is correct, she is more likely to be Amazith Dutton (b. 1813), the youngest daughter of Timothy Dutton III and his wife Mary Williams. If so, she was probably born in Massachusetts, since although Timothy Dutton III was living in Hebron, CT in 1790, by 1800, he had moved to Northfield, MA.
Date Note: The silhouette of Lucy and Ada Dutton may be quite securely dated to the early 1830s, based on the ages of the two girls. The wood-engraved torsos which are featured in 1986.283.2, 1986.283.4, and 1986.183.5 also appear to be characteristic of ca. 1830.
Inscription Note: Inscriptions on the backs of the silhouettes were probably added by a cataloguer or genealogical researcher at some point in the 20th century. The information contained in them is not necessarily accurate.
