MarkingsOriginal paper label on verso of new mount, in black ink: Charlotte M. Johnson / born in / Branford, Conn. / July 6, 1801 / Died Oct. 25, 1899 / in / Petersburg, Va.InscribedOn verso of frame, lower center, in white pencil: 1990-14-1NotesSubject Note: According to a handwritten note from Mrs. Meredith E. Watson, Hattie Mertens Johnson is a decendant of Charlotte M. Johnson and Timothy Johnson (see 1990.14.2). In January 25, 1871, Hattie Mertens Johnson married Robert Turner Meade, the first cousin of Mrs. Watson's grandmother. It is likely that Charlotte M. Johnson was the daughter of Timothy Johnson due to their difference in age. It is possible they were husband and wife, but both arguments remain unconfirmed.
Date Note: The silhouettes of both Charlotte M. Johnson and Timothy Johnson appear strikingly similar in design; it is possible that they were both made around the same time. Charlotte M. Johnson appears much younger than Timothy Johnson, whose silhouette resembles a man in his 50's or 60's. Birth records indicate a 44 years age difference between Timothy and Charlotte M. Johnson, and based on the estimate made of Timothy Johnson's age, this would suggest that Charlotte M. Johnson was in her late teens to her 20's and that the silhouettes were made ca. 1820.
