James Robert Upson

American, 1809 - 1877
BiographyJames Upson was born 26 April 1809 in Marion, Southington, Connecticut. He was the son of Lydia Webster Upson (1781-1861) and Asahel Upson (1783-1867). He married Mary Rhoda Jones (1837-1904) in Cheshire, Connecticut, on 2 November 1859. She was a direct descendant of Governor Theophilus Eaton of the New Haven Colony. The Upsons had three children: James Franklin (b. 1860); Robert Ellsworth (b. 1863); and Harry Gad (1867-1907).

James Upson worked in his father's tin shop as a boy, but later became interested in gold mining. He and his brother, DeWitt, moved to Quindarro, Kansas, to start a business. Their property was confiscated during guerrilla warfare, and they returned to Connecticut. In 1864, James Upson went to Virginia City, Montana, where he built a store and carried miners' supplies, hardware, and provisions. He returned to his Connecticut farm two years later, where he remained until his death. James Upson died in Marion, Connecticut, on 8 May 1877. He is buried next to his wife in Wonx Springs Cemetery.
