Bates Hoyt How

American, born 1776
BiographyBates Hoyt How was born in 1776 in Canaan, Connecticut, the son of Samuel How, Jr. (b. 1732) and his second wife, Lydia (Pain) How, who married in 1768. The father, Samuel How, was born in Stamford, but moved with his family at an early age to Canaan in Litchfield County. By 1785, the family had moved again, to New Marlborough, Massachusetts, were Bates and his twin, James, were baptized. Other siblings include an older brother, Bowers (b. 1769), and sister, Lois (b. 1771). Bates How's biography remains uncertain. He may have migrated westward, but his name does not appear in New York or Ohio census records. The How(e) family genealogy indicates that Bates died unmarried but provides no death date. An inscription in the North Canaan, Connecticut, cemetery is said to state that a Mrs. Bates How died 27 May 1801. This report may be in error, with the recorded death being that of the cabinetmaker.

Brother Bowers How is known to have been in New Marlborough as late as 1803 when a child was born to him and his wife. Before 1810 Bowers had migrated to New York State, where he is listed in the federal census that year and later. Brother James How probably followed suit, as he was married in New York State.

Bates How's work closely resembles that of Reuben Beman, Jr. (1772) of New Marlborough, Massachusetts.
