DescriptionThree-quarter length portrait of a young woman wearing a long skirt and a blouse trimmed with gold braid over a plain white blouse or shift. She wears a dagger on a chain, tucked in a scarf tied below her waist as a girdle, and a shawl over her head. Three strands of pearls or beads are around her neck, and a flower is attached to the lowcut neck of her blouse. A second flower and what appears to be holly leaves and berries are tucked beneath her shawl. The index finger of her right hand rests on her chin and her left hand is on her right elbow.
NotesSubject Note: The visual source for the pose of the woman in this print is a painting by Charles Lucas Lucien Mueller (1815-1892). The composition, including the woman's costume, is virtually identical, but in reverse. The painting has a landscape background which is not included in the print. The Mueller painting is closely based on the portrait of the Comtesse d'Haussonville by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867). The Kelloggs must have known the Mueller portrait from an engraved source. Since the Ingres portrait was executed in 1845, and since the print was apparently issued in the same year, the Ingres painting must have been copied almost immediately. (Finlay 12/23/2002)
