DescriptionWhite silk satin slippers with square toes, square throatline, and flat soles. The slippers are unadorned, but stitched to the sides are remnants of silk tapes that would have been laced around the ankles. The throatline is bound with white silk tape. Under the binding tape is a string, which is accessible under the center top of the throatline binding so that the fit of the slipper can be adjusted and the opening doesn't stretch out of shape. The satin is worn off so that the structure of the shoe underneath can be seen: a crescent of white kid leather stiffens the heel area. The satin is lined with soft white kidskin in the quarters and plain-woven linen in the vamp. The sock lining is also white leather. The soles are straight.
Worn by Ann Francis Darling of New Haven, Connecticut at her wedding to Henry Ibbotson on 23 July 1833. Donated to the Connecticut Historical Society by her great granddaughters, Marion Hall Gildersleeve Blunt White and her sister Lucile Darling Gildersleeve Chapman, on 20 May 1959.
