DescriptionWoman's shift of plain, medium-weight linen. The threads are streaked with brown and are unevenly spun. The shift front and back are cut as one, with a foldline at the shoulders, which is reinforced with a narrow strip of fabric. It is pieced at the sides to create the necessary flare. The neckline is round and low (about 6 1/4 inches deep), and the sleeves are short (six inches) and tight. Ease is provided by underarm gussets. Seams are selvage-to-selvage, or flat-felled.
