DescriptionWoman's shift of plain-woven, heavy linen. The front and back panels are cut separately and seamed at the shoulders and side seams. The right side of the shift is pieced to complete the flare at the lower half of the body. The neckline is a wide, rounded square, approximately seven inches deep. The sleeves are short (9 1/2 inches) and narrow. Ease is created by underarm gussets. Both gussets are pieced. Seams are generally flat-felled or selvage-to-selvage. The seam allowance of the shoulders is stitched to one side. The neckline, hem, and sleeve openings are turned under about 1/4 inch.
