NotesDate Note: Although this photograph dates to the 1870s or later, it is based on a drawing which in turn was undoubtedly based on another photograph of Burnham taken in the 1860s during the Civil War. (Finlay 4/13/2012)Subject Note: John H. Burnham served in the Sixteenth Regiment Connecticut Volunteer Infantry, as adjutant and later as Lieutenant Colonel. He enlisted in August 1862 and was wounded at Suffolk, Virginia in May 1863. In April 1864, he was among those captured and imprisoned when the Union garrison at Plymouth, North Carolina was obliged to surrender following an intense three-day siege. He was paroled on 30 November 1864 and mustered out on 24 June1865.
