NotesAttribution Note: The painting is signed at the lower right in red paint, "C. J. Fox" which refers to a firm begun in the late 19th century by Charles J. Fox (d. 1936) and carried on by his son, Leo Fox (d. 1978) who took over the firm in 1933. It is carried on today by Leo's son, James Fox who joined the firm in 1961 although he had begun painting "handkerchiefs and buttons" for his father several years prior to 1961. The firm continues to be operated today (2009) by James Fox who paints portraits from photographs as his father did. James Fox prefers the attribution, "From the studio of C. J. Fox."
The portrait of Jacob L. Fox may have been painted by Leo Fox while he was in Connecticut working in the 1930s. It may also have been painted from a photograph as a posthumous commission for G. Fox & Co. to commemorate the sesquicentennial in the 1940s. The artist is no known relation to the subject. (Notes from a telephone conversation with James Fox on 2/23/2009, E. Blakelock)
