DescriptionWhite cotton petticoat, with the skirt stitched smoothly into the waistband across the front and sides, and gathered at the center back. The top 16 inches of the petticoat are smooth, and then a series of gradually narrower strips of fabric, alternating with insertions of lace, are gathered, creating extra width and fullness. (The length of the petticoat has been shortened by taking a 1 1/2-inch tuck on the inside, just above the first row of gathering.) Beneath this topmost layer of ruffles is another, plain layer, finished with 4 1/2-inch ruffle trimmed with lace; below this is a plain 4 1/2-inch-wide ruffle. The petticoat closes at center back with a button (now missing) at the waistband.
