BiographyM. Swift & Sons Company was founded in 1887 by Matthew Swift. Matthew Swift was born in Birmingham, England in 1842 and immigrated to Hartford, Connecticut in 1864. After his arrival in Hartford, Swift began working at the gold beating shop of J. M. Ney & Company, where he worked for 25 years until 1887, when Swift opened his own gold beating company on Love Lane in Hartford.

By 1902, M. Swift & Sons had established itseld as the largest gold beating firm in Connecticut. In 1912, Matthew Swift died and left the company to his two sons, Matthew H. and Ernest Swift. In 1928, the company was incorporated.

In 1940, the company was a pioneer in the use of infrared technology as an industrial tool. In 1942, the company was awarded a contract to supply the gold leaf for the regilding of the dome of the Connecticut State Capitol. In 1968, after the establishment of a free market for gold, the use of gold leaf made by Swift slowly declined. In 2005, after the death of M. Allen Swift, grandson of Matthew Swift, the company ceased operations.
