Alfred Cowles III

BiographyAlfred Cowles III was born on 15 September 1891 in Chicago, Illinois. He was the son of Alfred Cowles II (1865-1939) and Elizabeth Cheney Cowles (1865-1898) of Manchester, Connecticut. His father was a director of the Cheney Bros. silk manufacturing firm, and may have been an attorney. He may have had some connection with the Chigago Tribune Bob Cowles' grandfather, Alfred Cowles I, who had been the Tribune's business manager.
Alfred Cowles III and his three brothers may have been raised by their maternal aunt Harriet Bowen Cheney, who had married their father's brother, William H. Cowles.
Alfred Cowles III graduated from Yale University in 1913. He married Elizabeth L. Strong on 10 May 1924. They adopted two children, Richard Livingston Cowles (b. 1925) and Ann Cowles (b. 1928). He and Elizabeth were divorced in 1939, and in 1949 he married Louise Phelps. Alfred Cowles III died in 1984.
