Thomas Mills Day

BiographyThomas Mills Day was born in Hartford on November 21, 1817, a son of Thomas and Sarah (Coit) Day. He was educated at Yale, graduating in 1837. He then studied and practiced law in Hartford, retiring from that profession because of deafness, according to his obituary. He purchased the Hartford Courant in 1855, and became the editor, leaving in 1866.

Day married Ann Dunn (1827-1896) of Boston in 1851. They had two children, Ellen Channing Day (1852-1924) and Thomas Day (1857-1860).

In 1862, Day married his second wife, Ellen Cornelia Pomeroy (1840-1927). Their children were Thomas Mills Day, Jr. (1864-1947), Sarah Coit Day (b. 1866), Arthur P. Day (b. 1868), and Clive H. Day (b. 1871).

Thomas Mills Day died in Hartford at the age of 87 on October 17, 1905.
