Jabez Hamlin

BiographyJabez Hamilton was a lawyer, magistrate, and soldier. He was born in Middletown, Connecticut, on July 28, 1709, the youngest son of John and Mary (Collins) Hamlin. He graduated from Yale in 1728. He was a deputy in the General Assembly from 1731 to 1733, the Speaker of the House in some later sessions, and a member of the Governor's Council from 1758 to 1766. As a judge, he served as the first judge of probate in Middletown from 1752 to 1784, and the judge of the Hartford County court from 1754 to 1784. He was a member of the Council of Safety during the American Revolution, and was a colonel in the militia. He served as the first mayor of Middletown when the city was incorporated in 1784, until his death on April 25, 1791.
Hamlin was married four times: first, to Mary Christophers of New London; she died in Middletown on April 13, 1736. They had five children. His second wife was Margaret Phillips, whom he married in Middletown on December 6, 1736. They had two children. She died on September 6, 1748. Then, he married Abigail Chauncey in Middletown on April 15, 1749. They had three children. She died in Middletown on November 3, 1768. His fourth wife was Mrs. Samuel (Susannah Newton) Whittelsey of Milford, who died in Middletown on May 9, 1803.
