BiographyJohn Smibert was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 24 March 1688. He worked as a house painter and a coach painter before becoming a portrait painter. In 1728, he accompanied his friend George Berkeley to Newport, Rhode Island, soon moving to Boston, Massachusetts, where he spent the rest of his life. He died in Boston 2 April 1751.
