DescriptionRectangular buff-colored earthenware dish and lid with a blue-tinted glaze, a type of ceramic known as pearlware. The inside bottom of the dish (.a) is decorated with a transfer-printed design in black enamel showing Yale College and the State House in New Haven, Connecticut. The scene in New Haven shows college buildings, spires and a fenced-in green to the left, a tree-lined dirt road in the center, and a building with a portico supported by six columns on the right. In the foreground, a couple is walking along the street to the left of a tree. The New Haven scene is surrounded by a border of transfer-printed flowers, then a second border at the rim consisting of a field of black and grey with small flowers, scrolls, and white dots. The dish has handles that are part of the body.

The curved lid (.b) has a finial which was molded and skillfully applied to the top. The lid has a border at the rim, similar to the border on the dish, but a different transfer-printed landscape. The lid is decorated with two identical landscapes and two clusters of flowers. The landscape shows a field with trees and rocks overlooking a body of water with a sailboat. A small figure is sitting on the rocks with a sketch pad, looking out over the water.

Three imperfections in the earthenware, found on the transfer-printed scene and on the bottom of the dish, are surrounded by a small brown discoloration. There is crazing visible on the bottom of the dish.
Object number1961.12.7a-b
MarkingsTransfer-printed mark on bottom of plate reads "Yale College/ & State House:/ New Haven./ Jackson's Warranted".

Two identical sticky paper labels found on the inside of the lid and the bottom of the dish, in hand-written blue ink, read, "Morgan/ B/ Brainard".
NotesSubject Note: The probable source for this view of the New Haven green appears to be a print by Fenner, Sears & Co, based on a drawing by J. A. Davis, published in London in 1831. The buildings on the left are the Yale campus, and at the right is the State House, erected in 1828. At the extreme right is the North Congregational Church, built in 1815.
