DescriptionPair of oval, drape-molded Chinese export porcelain fruit baskets with pierced sides and hand-painted underglaze cobalt blue decoration showing a Chinese landscape; the fruit baskets are a type of Chinese export porcelain known as Cantonware. The landscape, found on the bottom of the inside of each fruit basket, shows a willow tree and a Chinese structure to the right. A Chinese junk floats on the river that runs through the landscape, with a bridge in the foreground and houses, hills, and trees in the distance. The pierced sides of the interior of each basket are left plain, while the rims have two borders. The first is a "Canton" border, consisting of a scalloped line with parallel lines of hatching running inside. The second border, found on the outer edge of the rim, is a band of blue with darker lines creating a diamond pattern inside. The foot of each basket has a border as well, consisting of a blue band with darker lines creating a geometric pattern inside. Imperfections in the porcelain appear as dark dots in the surface of each fruit basket. One fruit basket (.1) has three small spots of paint on and around the rim.
