DescriptionOval, Chinese export porcelain fruit basket with pierced sides and hand-painted underglaze cobalt blue decoration showing a Chinese landscape; the fruit basket is a type of Chinese export porcelain known as Cantonware. The central Chinese landscape, found on the bottom of the inside of the fruit basket, consists of a willow tree with a Chinese structure to the right. A Chinese junk floats on the river that runs through the landscape, with a bridge in the foreground and houses, hills, and trees in the distance. The pierced sides of the interior of the basket are left plain, while the rim has two borders. The first is a "Canton" border, consisting of a scalloped line with parallel lines of hatching running inside. The second border, found on the outer edge of the rim, is a band of blue with darker lines creating stars inside. The foot of the basket has a border as well, consisting of a blue band with darker lines creating a geometric pattern inside. Imperfections in the porcelain appear as dark dots in the surface of the fruit basket.
