DescriptionCherry kettle stand in the late Chippendale or early Federal style. The square top has light and dark wood inlay and a molded lip at the edge. The inlay begins in the center with a four lobed pinwheel surrounded by a square, with a small diamond at each corner of the square. The square is off-set inside a larger square that follows the shape of the top. Each corner of the outer square is curved, and there is a fan of light and dark wood inlaid into the interior of each corner in the larger square. The kettle stand has a baluster-shaped pedestal, over a cylindrical base and three cabriole legs each ending in a pad foot with a pad on the bottom. The bottom edge of the pedestal base and the lower edge of the legs near the base have carving, consisting of cyma curves, or S-curves, and reverse cyma curves.
Condition: The inlaid pinwheel and surrounding wood are damaged; the wood has split and darkened. The split near the pinwheel continues across the top of the kettle stand. Some small areas of inlay are repaired. The kettle stand has been refinished.
Design and Construction Details: The top is made from a single board; the molding is nailed to each edge of the top. The top is screwed from the bottom to a rectangular cleat. The pedestal is tenoned into the cleat. The legs are dovetailed into the pedestal base.
