DescriptionOvoid, wide-mouthed, two gallon, grey stoneware jar with a salt glaze on the exterior and a brown slip glaze, or Albany-type glaze, on the interior. The jar has a plain vertical rim with a single incised line about two inches below the rim, an ovoid body, and a flat bottom. Two pulled lug handles have been applied to opposite sides of the jar, over the incised line; the handles are pressed against the jar along their full length. To one side, between the handles, a maker's mark is impressed just above the incised line. The oval mark reads, "SMITH & DAY,/ MANUFACTURERS,/ NORWALK, CON". Below the mark and the incised line is the impressed number "2". Cobalt blue is applied lightly over the impressed marks, as well as at both ends of each handle. A hand-painted cobalt blue decoration is located on the opposite side of the jar from the mark, consisting of an abstract flower or leaf arrangement.
There is a crack in the side of the jar to the lower left of the mark, and a crack in the rim and side on the opposite side of the mark. There is a small gouge in the surface of the stoneware to the lower left of the cobalt blue decoration. There are four chips of various sizes in the rim. There are three drips of paint adhered to the inside of the jar.

MarkingsTo one side, between the handles, a maker's mark is impressed just above the incised line. The oval mark reads, "SMITH & DAY,/ MANUFACTURERS,/ NORWALK, CON". Below the mark and the incised line is the impressed number "2". The rectangular residue from a piece of masking tape is located immediately below the impressed mark. Further down the same side, there are two pieces of masking tape. The top piece has "[1]843-c.1874" hand-written in blue ink. The second piece of masking tape has no writing and is missing large portions. A third piece of masking tape is adhered to the opposite side of the jar, above the cobalt blue decoration and below the tim. It has "150.00" hand-written in blue ink.On View
