DescriptionRound, wide-mouthed, grey stoneware jar with a ruddy brown salt glaze on the exterior and interior. The jar is decorated with hand-painted cobalt blue and has two pulled lug handles. The handles are pressed against the jar along their full length, attaching completely to the side of the jar just below the neck. The base of each end of each handle is decorated with hand-painted cobalt blue. A band of incised lines circle the neck of the jar. The same maker's mark, "P.CROSS/ HARTFORD", is stamped twice on opposite sides of the jar, between the handles. The glazed exterior surface of the jar has small indentations and brown bumps. There are two major indentations in the stoneware, each one near the marks, and the rim is not completely round. The glaze on the inside of the jar is irregular and thick in some places. There is one chip in the rim, and many chips in the foot. An unknown sticky substance has adhered to the outside of the jar.
