DescriptionView of Horace Bushnell Cheney, Sr. and Hazel Burnham Slaughter. They are both facing the camera and each has one hand on an envelope or piece of paper that is held in front of Horace. He is wearing a suit and silk tie. She is wearing a dress that has crocheted accents and cuffs, with a long pendant necklace and a beaded belt. Her left hand is in a fist, resting on her left hip. There is an ornamental curtain hanging in the background, probably made of silk. They are at the International Silk Exposition in New York City.

There is a typed caption on a piece of paper that is attached to the back of the photograph, upside down. It was probably published, along with the photograph, in a newspaper. The caption reads: "GIRL DESIGNER WINS SCHOLARSHIP TO STUDY FASHIONS / FROM TOMB OF TUT-ANKH-AMEN. / Miss Hazel Burnham Slaughter, pretty young American / artist of New York, receiving from Horace B. Cheney / at the International Silk Exposition, New York, / the Tut-Ankh-Amen Scholarship which he awarded and / which will take her to Egypt to study Egyptian art / for American fashions and silk designs. / It is the belief of Mr. Cheney that the Egyptian / excavations / will give inspiration to American styles / and decorations. / Miss Slaughter, the daughter of a hand weaver, is the / first to receive such recognition. She studied art / at the Art Students League and was a pupil of / Marshal Fry. She already has won several prizes / and creates her designs with wax on silk. / (c) Keystone View Co). / KS. ----2--3---4."
