DescriptionNavy blue woven plastic straw, with very low crown surrounded by twisted "straw" ropes of blue and white, studded with gold stars. The brim is straight across the back at the base of the crown, curving forward and then gradually widening upward so that it is two inches wide at the front and looks something like a bill. The underside of the brim is white straw. Attached to the front of the crown, under the brim, is a sheer blue netting, hanging with two loose ends, each gathered into a tassel. The hat is lined with black plastic tulle; the edge of the crown is surrounded on the inside with a black grosgrain ribbon.
Object number2001.76.2
MarkingsWoven tapes stitched to the back of the crown edge: "ORIGINAL / Wm Silverman / NEW YORK" in blue on white; another tag woven in pink and green on white has a spool of thread, a thimble, and a pair of scissors, the thread unwinding to spell out "Wm Silverman." A third label, purple on white, reads "Mae Bennett / HARTFORD, CONN."Subject Terms
