DescriptionThree-quarter length portrait of a middle-aged man (Jeremiah Halsey), sitting at a table. In his right hand, which is resting on a piece of paper, he is holding a pen. Nearby is an inkwell. He wears a white wig and white ruffles at the neck and wrists. At the left behind him are books on shelves, at the right through the window is the State House in Hartford (Old State House) as it was originally built in 1796.
Object number1840.30.0
NotesDate Note: According to museum records, Joseph Steward operated a museum at the Old State House in Hartford, Connecticut as early as 1796, where it is known he would also display his paintings. Since the railing about the top of the old State House was added in 1815 and the cupola in 1822, the portrait would therefore seem to be between 1796 and 1815. It is perhaps one of the earliest Steward portraits done in Hartford. (Lee 10/23/2014)
