DescriptionMarking sampler worked in yellow-green, medium brown-gray, light brown-gray, mauve, medium blue, light blue, dark brown, and dark blue silk threads on a plain-woven linen ground using cross (over two threads) and Algerian eye stitches. The sampler is rectangular, oriented horizontally. It is laid out with six rows of three alphabets, and the numbers 1 through 11, over a marking motif. There are at least three crown designs and two hearts. There are vertical markers after the first and third alphabets. Certain lines of alphabets, numbers, and text are separated by various narrow borders, including straight and meandering lines. The sampler is unfinished.

The edges of the sampler are raw. The sampler is not framed.

Letters and Numbers: There are three alphabets and the numbers 1-11. The letters are uppercase script in alphabet 1, uppercase block in alphabet 2, and lowercase block in alphabet 3. The letters J and U are present in all alphabets. The letter O is repeated twice in the second alphabet.

Stitches: The sampler is worked in cross stitches over two threads.

Condition: The ground has many stains. The edges are raw. The sampler has light to moderate fading. The sampler is not framed.
