DescriptionMarking sampler worked in dark brown, medium browns, light browns, dark blue, blue-green, medium green, maroon, cream and gray silk threads on a plain-woven linen ground using cross stitches over two threads. The sampler is rectangular, oriented vertically. It is laid out with nine rows of three alphabets, the numbers 1 through 4, and the numbers 1 through 10. The letters "JS" appear in two places. The lines of alphabets and numbers are separated by various narrow borders, including straight and meandering lines. There is no border.

The sampler has a 3/16-inch double-turned hem on all four sides. The sampler is not framed.

Letters and Numbers: There are three alphabets, the numbers 1-4, and the numbers 1-10. The letters are uppercase block in alphabets 1 and 3, and lowercase block in alphabet 2. The letter J is present in the first and third alphabets only; the letter U is present in all alphabets. In the second alphabet, the letter 'q' is not present; it ends at "u". The letter M is repeated twice in the third alphabet. The number 5 is missing from the second set of numbers. The letters "JS" appear in two places.

Stitches: The sampler is worked entirely in cross stitches over two threads.

Condition: The sampler has light fading. The sampler is not framed.
