DescriptionOvoid, light grey stoneware vase with a matte turqoise glaze with small flecks of silver. The vase has a slightly flared rim, narrower neck, swelled sides, and a flat bottom. Many rows of horizontal incised lines circle the top three-quarters of the vase. The matte turquoise glaze covers the interior and exterior of the vase, with a few areas having a metallic, almost silver, appearance.

MarkingsThere are two labels adhered to bottom of the vase. The first is a rectangular, woven textile label with "#3 $40.00/ Luman KELSEY/ North CaNTon Conn" hand-written in black ink. The second label is a small, white, rectangular label with the number "43-1911" hand-written in ink. This label is adhered to the vase by a now yellowing piece of tape.NotesTechnique Note: According to hand-written notes in the object file for accession lot 1977.93.1-.21, during the firing of this "blue & silver vase ... an insurance man called and bothered Luman. He never found out what happened in the kiln to make this color. one of 5 or 6." The author of the hand-written note is unknown, but was probably a curator or administrator from the Connecticut Historical Society. (Hunt 2/9/2005)On View
